The Vault – Batman Money Clip

The Retcon Punchers spend an awful lot of time looking for ways to celebrate our nerdy obsessions. This means a lot of time sunk into scouring Etsy, Deviant Art, Think Geek or whatever. Sometimes we see things so great we just have to share them… and then clutch them fiercely to our collective chest. Throw it in The Vault.

First of all, yes that was Stan Lee! Alright, so this isn’t exactly a geeky product you’d find on Think Geek or Etsy, but it certainly does help us celebrate and even explore our nerdy obsessions. Mark Waid (of Daredevil fame) has introduced the first comics specific Massive Open Online Course, or M.O.O.C. for short. That means this is FREE and available to EVERYONE! All you need is the internet and a geeky appreciation of comics. That also means you get special access to interviews with some of the biggest names in comics. Names like Brian Bendis, Scott Snyder, Brian K. Vaughn, Gail Simone,  Jonathan Hickman, and MORE. Class begins on April 2nd and you can register right NOW! To get all the details check out Mr. Waid’s blog. Lastly, if you’re as excited about this as we are here at Retcon Punch then help spread the word!

Like Patrick’s birthday swag Vault post, this one is a little different. If you didn’t know, that’s me showing off my tattoo from Swamp Thing 9, inspired by Yanick Paquette’s orchid theme for Abby Arcane. As I started getting more and more into comics this last year, I knew my next tattoo would have to be comic-book themed somehow, but I didn’t want to get just a Wonder Woman logo or something like that; it needed to be more unique. Then I read Swamp Thing 9, and I was moved: not only by the beauty of Paquette’s work, but by the beauty of Scott Snyder’s story as well. It was the first time I realized just what comic books can be, and I knew exactly what tattoo I wanted.

I’m breaking the format a little bit today. I turned thirty-goddamned-years old last Friday. At the risk of alienating anyone over that age: that is old. But that doesn’t mean that two of the best women in my life can’t buy me presents with Batman on them. Continue reading

Who Would Love This: Retcon Punch

Price: $39.99 a piece

Remember the Green Lantern snuggy? Remember how crazy excited we were about the idea of a Retcon Punch slumber party? This is the obvious next step in adult-sized, comic-book-themed slumber party attire. I honestly don’t know why I have ever worn anything else to bed at night. It’s always such a hassle when I’m awaken by some emergency, and have to take the time to change into my superhero costume. This way, I’m ALWAYS PREPARED; these pajamas are the Boy Scouts of superhero sleepwear.

Website: Makeup By Siryn

Who Would Love This: Comic geeks, makeup geeks, looking awesome geeks

Price: NA

This Vault is a little different from most; there’s no product for sale. But I am so in love with Siryn’s comic-themed makeup looks, I had to feature her here. This is her Ice themed look (remember Ice, Guy Gardner’s ladyfriend?), and I adore it. It’s maybe a little much for everyday wear, but it’s such a great way to capture a character without doing a full costume; how fun would it be to do a look like this to go out dancing? She’s done a ton of different hero looks, as well as makeup reviews and the like.  My favorite look has got to be Wonder Woman; it’s pretty, I can see the influence, and it’s basic enough that I could potentially wear this to work. Time to find me some golden eye-liner.

Who Would Love This: Fans of vintage posters and signage, lovers of secret nerd art, trapeze aficionados

Price: $19.95-$34.95

I have obviously browsed the DC Comics official store on occasion, and while I’ve always found things I like I have never been blown away by an item that I feel I need to have. They have recently expanded their line of high-quality prints, however, and these change everything. Once again, I have found the kinds of posters that, from afar, don’t look like anything other than faux-vintage hipster wall art. Look again and you’ll see it’s actually faux-vintage hipster nerdy wall art, and I eat that shit up. I think the Flying Graysons poster here might be the best, and would look great with the Beware Crime Alley propaganda poster, but the Kandor, Themyscira, and Coast City travel posters would look pretty sharp together, too.

Who Would Love This: Nerdy people who don’t want moisture rings on their furniture

Price: $8.50 per set of four

I drink lots of liquids at home. Who better to guard my furniture from moisture rings than The Flash? These coasters are really cool. They are made from actual comic book pages, on stone. The artist, Popcycled does lots of different ones, both DC and Marvel so you can show your allegiance in the subtlest way. Coaster racks are also available for purchase so these can be more easily displayed in your home. Coasters are something you don’t really see a lot of today, outside of cardboard ones at bars, or your grandma’s house, so lets bring them back! I plan on purchasing some of these real soon. Since these are made from actual comic books, I wonder if the artist would consider custom jobs?

Who Would Love This: Geeky, well-dressed men, geeky women who love geeky, well-dressed men

Price: $18.00

We’ve kind of fallen off the wagon for The Vault, so I decided to find a special geeky object to bring us back on track. So, what’s so special about a Flash tie clip? Duh, look at it; clearly it’s what you need when your tie is traveling at tremendous speeds. There are a number of clips to choose from, as well as belt buckles, hair bows, and other assorted jewelry. This Etsy store is extra special to me, because the gal who makes this stuff lives in Chicago, and I do love supporting local nerds. On top of that, I already own a piece of jewelry from here; alert reader Taylor got me this awesome Wonder Woman necklace for my birthday. Now, instead of just thinking about comics all the time without anyone else the wiser, I can advertise to the world that even my jewelry is nerdy.

Who Would Love This: Macs that need to show the people of Gotham that they don’t have to be afraid

Price: $3.99

So with Apple announcing yesterday their new line of Macbook Pros, I’ve been drooling over them. I am planning on getting one, since I’m due for a new laptop, and what better way to trick out your Mac than to make it a BatMac? There were several different Batman stickers, but I like this one the best. Also, the chest logo glows, just like our Green Lantern sticker. Also, I like the idea of a BatMac.
