Wonder Woman 6


Today, Shelby and Drew are discussing Wonder Woman 6, originally published February 15th, 2012.

Shelby: Let me explain: I have loved Greek mythology since I was just a young lass. I picked up a copy of Jason and the Argonauts from my middle school library many, many years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I think what is most appealing to me about the Greek gods and goddesses is their human failings. They toe the line between being the source of human characteristics, to just being overly emphasized caricatures. They’re silly, stupid, petty, jealous, vain: they fall for the same tricks and make the same mistakes as all us regular folk. In this way, the gods of Greece are the great lessons for what to do and what not to do; their “nobody’s perfect” depiction makes them relatable. Wonder Woman 5

DC Comics recently relaunched their entire series, giving curious but uninitiated nerds a convenient entry point.  Fellow blogger Drew Baumgartner and I are two such nerds, and we’ve decided to jump in with a handful of monthly titles.  We really wanted to pull out all the nerd stops, so we’re also going to be writing about them here and on Drew’s blog (which you should all be reading anyway) every Friday.  This week, I’m hosting the discussion of Wonder Woman while Drew is hosting the discussion of Batman.

Patrick: I gotta say, I’m more than a little bummed out about the artist change for this month’s issue of Wonder Woman.  Tony Atkins by no means does a bad job with penciling this issue, but I was already so attached to Cliff Chiang’s versions of the characters that the switch is unsettling.  Aktin’s style embraces some of the cartoony qualities of the first four issues, but lacks the brutal charm Chiang milks out of his simple, more angular designs.  The issue gets by well enough, but the visuals in the earlier issues could have carried whatever material Brian Azzerello wrote, instead of dragging it down, as it does here. Wonder Woman 1-4

Patrick: The ladyfriend and I tried something new this evening.  I hooked my computer up to the TV and we read Wonder Woman 1-4 together.  She doesn’t read comics – I think the only thing she’s ever read was Batman: Year One, and if I recall correctly, I read it to her.  She’s not in to the whole genre, but she is a woman, and that’s a perspective that I think it always going to be important regarding whatever Wonder Woman series DC is running.  My point is, I got a little female insight into this character, expect to see it scattered throughout this write-up.
