The Vault – Bizarro Superman T-Shirt

The Retcon Punchers spend an awful lot of time looking for ways to celebrate our nerdy obsessions. This means a lot of time sunk into scouring Etsy, Deviant Art, Think Geek or whatever. Sometimes we see things so great we just have to share them… and then clutch them fiercely to our collective chest. Throw it in The Vault.

Bizarro Superman T-ShirtWebsite: Super Hero Stuff

Who Would Love This: Bizarro Superman fans/regular Superman fans who just want to see how they look in the mirror.

Price: $23.99

I know what you’re thinking: “Oh, a t-shirt with a superhero logo. Real original.” But I think that’s the beauty of this shirt. To the uninitiated, this will just look like a regular Superman shirt, but on closer inspection, the “S” is backwards. Curious passersby may inquire about the apparent mistake, at which point you can explain the whole concept of Bizarro Superman before bidding them a fond “hello.” Really, though, this shirt is pretty much guaranteed to make you the nerdiest person in any room; it’s a nerdy Superman shirt for those who don’t know who Bizarro is, and it’s a super nerdy shirt for the people who do. Or, as Bizarro would put it, “this shirt am cool.”

Who Would Love This: Nerds with cold and/or slow heads

Price: $25.00

Before seeing this item, I’d never really associated the fastest man alive with the pastime that makes even knitting look exciting, but now I’ll never be able to imagine them separately. Sure, crocheting is the thing your grandma does after she tires of looking at the bird-feeder, but it’s downright exciting when the result is something as awesome as this handmade bit of cosplay fun. The artist (who offers a few other comics-inspired hats) custom makes these to order, so ironically points out that these take about two weeks to ship — too bad Barry Allen didn’t go into crocheting custom hats, amirite? Sizes range down to 0-3 months, which would be adorable if it wasn’t so frickin’ cool (there are no pictures of babies wearing these, which I assume is because they were moving too fast to photograph).

Website: Society 6

Who Would Love This: Batman lovers, paleontologists, people with eyes to see how awesome this is

Price: $35.00

This was sent to me by alert reader and dinosaur fiend Taylor Anderson, and I don’t have the words in my vocabulary to describe how awesome this is, other than to just point and say “Look at it!” Don’t have an iPhone? No problem! Society 6 is one of those sites that puts artists’ images on pretty much anything, so you can get this as a t-shirt, art print, laptop skin, etc. And if, for some bizarre reason I can’t understand, you don’t want Batman riding a T-Rex on your phone, there are actually a TON of comic book related images at Society 6 to check out. I only picked this one because….well, just look at it!

Who Would Love This: Shelby.  Or, nerdy grandmothers.

Price: $3.63 (which is less than I spent on a blended chai this weekend)

Since the common man has long-since lost his ability to chisel his most solemn prayers and aphorisms into stone, we have developed the technology of “cross-stitch.” Normally, you’ll see the Nicene Creed on a pillow on your grandmother’s couch, or a pithy little statement about the value of family framed in your aunts den, but why not broaden that? Why not add the battle-cry of the Green Lanterns to that list? And at the low low price of “basically nothing,” what have you got to lose?

Who Would Love This: Corps hopefuls

Price: unknown, contact artist

I have this thing for cool retro-style posters. I caught a glimpse of these when Shelby and I were at C2E2. They are really slick. I wish he had finished the whole set. The collector in me wants the whole set. That’s why I didn’t buy any at C2E2. (That, and I didn’t have a lot of money on me) These posters really capture what each Corps is about, and it gets the message across. Plus, they look fantastic. I especially like the worn/dog-eared effect. If Matt were to complete the set and add the rest of the posters in, and then maybe consider a package deal, I would be really happy. Or you could just buy your favorite, and keep it up in your weight room as inspiration for all the hard work you are doing.

Who Would Love This: Nerdy babies.

Price: $18.99 a piece

I don’t have a baby. I don’t plan on having any in the near future. All my friends and siblings should consider themselves warned, though: once they start having babies, those babies are getting a couple of these. No better way to declare your superhero allegiance than advertising on your child, I always say. I mean, isn’t that the point of having children? To force your own idea and opinions on them as soon as possible, to turn them into little mini versions of yourself so they can hate it, and then grow up to do the same thing?

Website: Pop Chart Lab

Who Would Love This: Comic book fans / chart enthusiasts.

Price: $27.00

Have you ever found yourself trying to discuss what a given comic book character is capable of, only to discover you don’t have the appropriate vocabulary? I mean, what are you supposed to call what Mera can do? PONDER NO LONGER. This handy chart lists the abilities (supernatural or otherwise) of over 300 characters from Marvel and DC Comics. Some of it is a little simplified (Wolverine’s listed power is “claws”) and some of it is out-of-date (like Captain Cold doesn’t only have an ice-gun anymore), but it’s still an impressively nerdy graphic display. Click on the image above and go to the website to see close up and have all your power-related questions answered!

Green Lantern Macbook DecalWebsite: Etsy

Who Would Love This: Macbook users who love Green Lantern, so, you know, NERDS (but not, like, PC nerds).

Price: $8.99

Between three ongoing titles and several trade collections, the Retcon Punchers own A LOT of art featuring Green Lantern, but none of them actually glow. For a character whose powers revolve around making things out of green light, his powers are generally relegated to being represented with tricks and effects that can only hint at actual light. Not so with this clever decal. The artist has a whole line of decals featuring characters interacting with the Apple logo, but none make quite as natural use of the built-in lighting effect. Hal just wanted to make an Apple construct.

Batman and Superman Caped Pint Glasses

Website: Spencer’s

Who Would Love This: Old-schoolers who can’t get down with the Blackest Night Pint Glass Set/anyone who needs more billowing when drinking.

Price: $9.99 each

Capes are hard. They’re always getting stepped on and caught in doors, and air drying them is such a chore. Nightwing says capes throw off his balance, and they would just slow the Flash down. BUT they look cool. Why, then, should we restrict capes to human shoulders? Now your glassware can get in on the action! Not only do they look great in a breeze, but the capes also complete an ensemble: note the belts and underwear at the bottom of the glasses.  Now you’ll be drinking in style — right out of the torso of your favorite heroes.

Who Would Love This: People who haven’t played Arkham City yet because they were too busy with Skyrim, videogamers everywhere

Price: $50

The Batman ‘Arkham’ games have been some of the best superhero videogames I have ever played, bar none. Arkham Asylum was really good. Arkham City is FANTASTIC. If, for whatever reason you haven’t played this game yet, this Game of the Year Edition is totally worth every penny. Not only does it cost the same as the game did new, it comes with everything, and more. The included Catwoman story, while not required to beat the game adds another element to the main story to the point where you would be missing out without it. The GoY Edition also includes the Robin and Nightwing DLC, which has additional challenge maps and you get to plays as your favorite Boy Wonders. Also, for extra fun, you get the Batman Skins pack which lets you change Batman’s costume. Most fun is the Batman Beyond costume, which has no cape, but retractable wings. Continue reading
