The Vault – Green Lantern Macbook Decal

The Retcon Punchers spend an awful lot of time looking for ways to celebrate our nerdy obsessions. This means a lot of time sunk into scouring Etsy, Deviant Art, Think Geek or whatever. Sometimes we see things so great we just have to share them… and then clutch them fiercely to our collective chest. Throw it in The Vault.

Who Would Love This: Macbook users who love Green Lantern, so, you know, NERDS (but not, like, PC nerds).

Price: $8.99

Between three ongoing titles and several trade collections, the Retcon Punchers own A LOT of art featuring Green Lantern, but none of them actually glow. For a character whose powers revolve around making things out of green light, his powers are generally relegated to being represented with tricks and effects that can only hint at actual light. Not so with this clever decal. The artist has a whole line of decals featuring characters interacting with the Apple logo, but none make quite as natural use of the built-in lighting effect. Hal just wanted to make an Apple construct.

Green Lantern 9

Today, Shelby and Patrick are discussing Green Lantern 9, originally released May 9th, 2012.

Shelby: If you had a terrible personality flaw that you could change with a flip of a switch, and essentially become someone else, would you do it? What if you had done terrible things, but you could just snap your fingers and become a better person, would you make that change? How about if someone else had that control, and made that choice for you? You’re a better person for it, but does that make it ok? These are the questions running through my head, not as I’m on a trip of contemplation and personal discovery, but as I read this month’s Green Lantern.

Justice League 8

Today, Shelby and Peter are discussing Justice League 8, originally released April 18th, 2012.


Shelby: I love a good mystery. As a wee lass, I loved Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys; though my tastes have strayed somewhat since then, I still believe there is nothing better than mystery (big or small) to hook someone into a plot. Apparently, Geoff Johns agrees with me, because this month’s Justice League is loaded with mysteries of varying height and weight. Even though I’m not crazy about the actual events that took place in this issue, the mysteries Johns is beginning to uncover are tantalizing to a curious cat like me. Continue reading →

Green Lantern 8

Today, Drew and Shelby are discussing Green Lantern 7, originally released March 14, 2012.

Drew: Saying that Geoff Johns has a command over modern Green Lantern mythology goes without saying; the events (and many of the characters) that have shaped the Green Lantern universe over the past several years are his babies. It was his skill with not just the architecture, but the execution of these stories that had us so excited about all things Geoff Johns in the New 52. One might consider that excitement was misplaced, given the hit-or-miss nature of Justice League and Aquaman’s perennial status as our Retcon Punch-ing bag (until Detective Comics rightfully unseated it), but Green Lantern reveals Johns to be as commanding as ever of both the large- and small-scale details of his stories. Who Would Love This: Green Lantern fans, Flash fans, cuteness fans, all human life

One of my favorite artistic choices of the re-launch has been Francis Manapul’s take on The Flash. There’s something about a vaguely cartoonish depiction of Barry Allen that really works for me. These 8.5 x 8.5 prints take that concept to their logical extreme and deliver the cutest possible versions of Hal and Barry. Or Wally… it’s hard to tell who exactly is under that mask… Plus, squares are awesome – you could mount these things on the wall anyway you want: vertically, horizontally… I guess those are really the only two ways.

Green Lantern 7


Today, Patrick and Drew are discussing Green Lantern 7, originally released March 14, 2012.

Patrick: Remember the incredibly short-lived television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles? I watched the Pilot and maybe the two episodes that followed, but gave up on it pretty quickly thereafter. It just wasn’t especially good television and I don’t really care about the Terminator franchise. Even still, there was this lingering feeling that maybe I gave up on it too early because I resented seeing Summer Glau as anyone but River Tam. But I knew I made the right decision a few weeks later when the promo for the new episode used the the following line to tease a reveal: “You won’t believe what they find in the box.” If I won’t believe it, then just show it to me and let me not believe it – there’s nothing that kills my hard-on for mysteries like saying “OH MY GOD, LOOK HOW MYSTERIOUS THIS IS.” With that little bit of background, let’s dig into “The Secret of the Indigo Tribe (Part 1).” Continue reading →

Justice League 6

Today, Shelby and Patrick are discussing Justice League 6, originally released February 29th, 2012.

Shelby: I can appreciate the appeal of tradition. There is something very appealing to me about doing things “the old-fashioned way.” This isn’t to say that I can’t appreciate innovation, either, far from it. I just enjoy the comfort of doing things the way they’ve always been done. To me, this issue of Justice League is definitely a “classic comic book story.” Two parts action, one part cheesy dialogue, it’s precisely what you expect, and sometimes that’s what you want. There’s a fine line, however, between the enjoying the comfort of a classic and being frustrated by the same nonsense you’ve seen again and again. Green Lantern 6

Shelby: I forget how much I like Green Lantern. You wouldn’t think I would be able to forget; I devoured Rebirth and Blackest Night. Green Lantern was my introduction to the wackiness of the DC universe. Without Green Lantern, I probably would not be sitting here writing this post.  Hal’s cocky attitude, his eternally doomed relationship with Carol, his never-ending-struggle with Sinestro, his former mentor and partner: I enjoy it all. While I’ve been enjoying Green Lantern so far with the relaunch, it was this issue that really made me remember just how much I like Green Lantern. Continue reading →
