The New 52 1 (FCBD issue)

Today, Patrick, Drew, Peter and Shelby are discussing The New 52 1, originally released on Free Comic Book Day, May 5th, 2012.

Patrick: Now that the dust has settled and we’re all able to calm down after a thrilling Free Comic Book Day, it’s time to get down to brass tacks. The issue that DC released was anything but an easy entry-point, packing in more characters and mythology than we’ve seen in any single issue since the relaunch. This book makes a lot of intriguing promises for long-time fans, but I doubt new readers were all that excited to spend 11 pages following a character they’ve never heard of.

Yeah cloud storage and Drop Boxes and web-based email account may render the need for physical data storage totally obsolete, but in the meantime, let’s make sure our flash drives look like DC superheros. Look how big their heads are! That implies so much storage potential. Also, hilariously, there isn’t one for The Flash. Whu?

Peter:  We have officially reached the Second Wave of the New 52. With it, we see the reintroduction of the DC Multiverse, and thus alternate versions of some of our favorite super heroes. We begin here with Earth-2 #1, which will then lead us into the rest of this brave new world.

The Vault – Justice League Movie Poster Set

Who Would Love This: Art fans, gritty superhero movie fans, gritty superhero movie art fans

My love for secret nerd art is well documented. No one should be surprised that I like these. NO ONE. These prints look like old concert posters whose colors have run in the rain, or slapdash grafitti: they’re old, messy, and kind of dirty-looking. The artist, who goes by Harshness on Etsy, has a ton of very minimalist and graphically striking posters, any of which I would love. This full set of Justice League posters is probably my favorite, although he has a X-Men set that is also awesome. Plus, apparently he’s having a buy one, get one sale right now! So, if you don’t really have the wall space for the whole League, you can get Superman and Batman for the low low price of Superman alone! What a deal!

Wonder Woman 8

Today, Patrick and Shelby are discussing Wonder Woman 8, originally released April 18th, 2012.

Patrick: Last month, we were promised a trip to Hell. Given all the characters in-play in Wonder Woman, I foolishly assumed we’d get something of an Orpheus story. But that assumption proved too narrow and too literal: Brian Azzarello may have been given license to explicitly alter the Wonder Woman mythos, but he takes the same liberties with Greek mythology. The result is a trippy adventure through the underworld that is recognizably epic (in both the traditional and modern sense of the word) and wholly, boldly new.

Justice League 8

Shelby: I love a good mystery. As a wee lass, I loved Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys; though my tastes have strayed somewhat since then, I still believe there is nothing better than mystery (big or small) to hook someone into a plot. Apparently, Geoff Johns agrees with me, because this month’s Justice League is loaded with mysteries of varying height and weight. Even though I’m not crazy about the actual events that took place in this issue, the mysteries Johns is beginning to uncover are tantalizing to a curious cat like me. Continue reading →

Who Would Love This: Blackest Night fans, deputy enthusiasts, people who thought The Flash wasn’t already over-powered

There are actually a bunch of products with this image on it. I chose this one specifically, because if you own an iPad and you’re on this website, you’re probably reading comics on that thing from time to time. ADMIT IT! This iPad cover depicts the single coolest moment of Blackest Night – the moment the rings seek out deputies on Earth to aid in the fight against Neckron and the Black Lanterns. It’s not likely that we’ll ever see these characters like this again – one of the few downsides of the relaunch… Immortalize this once-in-the-multiverse moment by using the entire emotional spectrum to protect your $600 tablet.

Who Would Love This: Narcissists, people who want to pretend to be superheroes but lack imagination, the homely dude they used to model this product

Price: $127.39

Let me be clear, I’m not advocating purchase of this product. First of all, the price tag is astronomical (and oddly specific), but it also suggests that someone wants to pretend that they are a superhero, but can’t do that unless the hero literally has their face. As a kid, I used to hate that my Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves action figures didn’t look like the real characters, I can only imagine how I would have reacted to a Batman figure that looked like me. Oh, and the website makes a special note that the personalized action figures are not toys. Nothing says fun like “for display purposes only.”

Who Would Love This: Wonder Woman fans, old-school tattoo fans, rockabillies, and pin-up girls

You may not know this, but I love tattoos. I have a couple myself, and can’t wait to get more. This is a perfect marriage of all the things I like: comic books, vintage tattoo design, and secret nerd art. This 18×24 print could, to the untrained eye, just be a cool vintage piece of art, but SURPRISE! It’s a portrait of Wonder Woman! I love the design of her hair, and the roses, and…ok, basically I love everything about this. Is anyone at all remotely surprised by that fact? This practically has my name written all over it.

Justice League 7

Today, Peter and Shelby are discussing Justice League 7, originally released March 22nd, 2012.

Peter: Okay, I like a good team book as much as the next person. It allows for interesting character interaction on a regular basis. It also gives me the feeling that there are clearly some things that no one superhero can take down on their own. That’s how this Justice League came together; no individual could defeat Darkseid. They were brought together by fate — and Fatherboxes — to defeat evil. Now, we’ve jumped ahead to present day, the origins are long gone, and now we get a taste of the current Justice League. But why does it taste funny?
